Personalmente no entiendo muy bien cuando se refieren a él como fósil viviente o reliquia del pasado; el Ginkgo es un ser vivo, para nada un fósil y en cuanto a lo de reliquia no se que quieren decir exactamente ni que tiene que ver con el brazo incorrupto de santa teresa.
Eso si, es un árbol excepcional en todos los sentidos, por su carácter, su historia y sus particularidades.
Catalogémoslo así, como algo único, como un superviviente, como un ser fascinante que nos habla de otras épocas, de hace mas de 250 millones de años, del periodo "Pérmico" cuando la tierra casi ni siquiera era tierra sino un solo continente rodeado de mar, Pangea, cuando no existían aun ni los dinosaurios, cuando aparecieron los primeros vegetales en esa primigénea superficie sólida estable. Pero no sólo un superviviente por eso, por ser el mas antiguo... hay que saber que fué uno de los pocos seres vivos que resistieron la primera bomba atómica en Hirosima a muy poca distancia del epicentro... Sobrevivió a la extinción masiva de hace 250 millones de años en la que perecieron el 95% de las especies y posteriormente a las de hace 200 millones y 60 millones de años provocadas por un gigantesto volcán y un meteorito respectivamente, en las que desaparecieron casi la mitad de las especies vivas...

Curioso el hecho que la medicina china lo venga utilizando tradicionalmente, ¡como son los chinos! mas que nada para favorecer la circulación sanguínea. Y que casualidad que recientemente se haya descubierto su resistencia a los radicales libres, aquellos que parece ser provocan el envejecimiento destruyendo sistemáticamente las células -entre otras situaciones- durante el proceso de digestión, algo directamente relaccionado con el consumo de oxígeno, ¡que cosas! aquello que nos permite vivir nos hace morir... el oxígeno y los alimentos: los radicales libres se producen durante ese proceso, bombardean nuestras células deteriorándolas severamente y provocando el envejecimiento. El ginkgo produce una sustancia muy resistente que a fecha de hoy no ha sido debidamente estudiada (están en ello)... puede que sea ese el motivo por el que llegan a vivir dos mil, 4mil años...
En cuanto a sus características botánicas hay que señalar que el Ginkgo es caducifolio, algo extraño dentro de los gimnospermas (sólo el Ginkgo y el Alerce lo son), y son precisamente sus hojas las que le hacen facilmente identificable por su forma en abanico con una gran muesca en el ápice y de color verde brillante (amarillentas en otoño)
Su crecimiento puede ser de unos 30 cmts/año en circunstancias normales - en sus primeros años- y admite cualquier tipo de suelo bien drenado, preferiblemente al abrigo de vientos frios y secos.
Su porte es variable, cónico de joven y después columnar y extenso. A veces presenta varios troncos principales y la corteza es de color gris mate, estriada y fisurada.
Las "flores" son poco frecuentes, masculinas y femeninas en plantas separadas, estas últimas como bellotas.
Los "frutos" son redondeados, lisos, parecidos a las ciruelas pero de un olor algo pútrido cuando maduran.
Se reproduce por semilla en otoño o esquejes semileñosos en verano o leñosos en invierno.
En Valladolid podemos ver un par de ejemplares en el Campo Grande, junto a la zona de juegos infantiles y nos han hablado de otro en Parquesol.
Actualmente el Ginkgo Biloba es el único representante de su familia "Ginkgoceaes", su género y su especie, aunque antiguamente era una familia muy amplia según aparece documentado en diferentes fósiles.
Ha sido tradicionalmente cultivado por los chinos junto a los templos y se creía desaparecido en su forma silvestre pero han aparecido ejemplares en distintas regiones del sudeste de China.
