Cuando aún no hemos podido ver en España la película Grizzly Man, sobre la vida de Timothy Treadwell, un ecologista que durante 13 veranos convivió y filmó a los osos pardos de Alaska, estrenada en el pasado festival de Sundance, Werner Herzog ya ha terminado otra película, en este caso Rescue Dawn (aquí el trailer), que a su vez está basada en el documental de 1997 del propio Herzog "Little Dieter Needs To Fly" sobre la captura y fuga del piloto alemán Dieter Dengler en Laos durante la guerra de Vietnam. Christian Bale interpreta a Dieter Dengler.

Esperemos que en estas nuevas entregas no malogre su talento con la introducción de auto-adulteraciones como las secuencias digitales de "Invencible".

Creo que a los que nos gusta mucho Herzog nos produce más placer este texto que a los que le detestan. Me refiero, claro está, a Klaus Kinski escribe sobre Werner Herzog.

Algunas citas: "No entiendo en absoluto de qué está hablando, excepto que está enamorado de sí mismo sin motivo aparente y está fascinado por su propia osadía, que no es más que la ignorancia de un diletante. Cuando cree que ha llegado el momento de que yo haya comprendido lo cojonudo que él es, me confiesa, sin más preámbulos y con aire de estar de vuelta de todo, las condiciones de vida y de trabajo que me esperan; es como si estuviera leyéndome una merecida sentencia. Y afirma, con el mismo descaro y ramplonería (por decirlo así, relamiéndose los labios, como si se tratara de un bocado delicioso), que todos los que participan en el proyecto está dispuestos a aceptar con alegría las inimaginables fatigas y privaciones que les esperan, con tal de de seguirle los pasos a él, a Herzog. Es más: todos ellos incluso arriesgarían la vida por él sin pestañear. Por lo que respecta a él, está dispuesto a jugárselo todo a una carta para obtener su meta. Cueste lo que cueste: "Película o muerte", como dice él mismo con la insolencia de los estúpidos. Al mismo tiempo cierra los ojos, tolerante, ante los abortos de su delirio de grandeza, que él confunde con genialidad. Eso sí, confiesa sinceramente que a veces sus propias excentricidades le producen vértigo, pero se deja arrastrar por ellas.

Tiene una manera de hablar plúmbea, más perezosa que un sapo, minuciosa, quisquillosa, fragmentaria; de su boca brotan cascotes de palabras, que intenta retener al máximo, como si le pagaran intereses por ellas. Pasa una eternidad hasta que por fin se saca del cerebro uno de sus mocos mentales resecos. Luego se contonea en doloroso éxtasis, como si tuviera llenos de azúcar sus dientes podridos. Una lentísima máquina de parlotear. Un modelo anticuado, cuyo interruptor no funciona y es imposible parar, a menos que se desconecte el interruptor central de la corriente. En fin, debería partirle la cara. No, debería dejarlo inconsciente a puñetazos. Pero incluso inconscientemente seguiría hablando. Aunque le cortasen las cuerdas vocales, seguiría hablando como un ventrílocuo. Aunque le rajasen el gaznate y lo decapitasen, seguirían brotándole vaciedades de la boca, como los gases producidos por una putrefacción interior.

...Su supuesto "talento" consiste únicamente en torturar criaturas indefensas y, si hace falta, matarlas de cansancio o asesinarlas. Nadie ni nada le interesa, a excepción de su penosa carrera de supuesto cineasta. Impulsado por un ansia patológica de causar sensación, provoca él mismo las más absurdas dificultades y peligros y pone en juego la seguridad e incluso la vida de otros, sólo para después poder decir que él, Herzog, ha domeñado fuerzas aparentemente insuperables. Para sus películas echa mano a personas poco desarrolladas mentalmente y de diletantes, a los que puede manejar a su antojo (¡y, supuestamente, hipnotizar!), y a los que paga un salario de hambre, eso si les paga. El resto son tullidos y abortos de todo tipo, a fin de parecer interesante. No tiene la menor idea de cómo se hace una película. Ya ni intenta darme instrucciones. Hace tiempo que ha renunciado a preguntarme si estoy dispuesto a llevar a cabo sus aburridas chorradas, ya que le tengo prohibido hablar".
