Tras casi 150 años de historia, los veteranos propietarios del bar Penicilino, han decidido jubilarse para (según sus propias palabras) "poder leer, pasear y escuchar música". Que sana envidia.
...Pero, al parecer, ciertos personajes de la city, pendencieros, callejeros y artisteros, han decidido coger el local para que, por lo menos, el ya mítico local siga en pie hasta que la dura especulación lo permita.
Que sea por muchos años y lo dicho, el dia 23 a la inauguración, además corren rumores de que la música que pongan va a ser toda libre, copyleft y creative commons ... ojalá.

En estos días de calor veraniego en los que en nuestra meseta castellana no hay donde parar, la única forma de sobrevivir es ocultarse en un local refrigerado que encontremos bajo la primera escusa que se nos ocurra.
Por ello supongo que a nadie desagradará el ser invitado al Café-Bar Penicilino (Pza. de la Libertad) el próximo día 17 de Agosto a las 20:30h, que me han dado la oportunidad de colocar algunas de mis obras y haremos una pequeña inauguración de esas en las que se comenta de todo menos los cuadros.

El bar El Penicilino, testigo de más de un siglo de historia de la capital, cierra sus puertas el próximo mes de enero
Hay veces que la Historia propone y la plebe dispone. Y entonces ocurre que a algunos lugares se les cuelga el nombre oficial en una chapa y el "real" se lo queda el imaginario colectivo. La plaza Martí y Monsó es, con perdón del pintor, la plaza de Coca, y a la de Cantarranillas el uso la ha elevado tanto que ha perdido el diminutivo.
Pocos recuerdan ya cuándo fue que el cartel de "Vinos, Alcoholes y Licores Juan Martín Calvo" dejó de respetarse y el local pasó a ser El Penicilino. Lo cierto es que hace unos años, Cristina Martín -que regenta el local desde hace dos décadas- se rindió a la evidencia y colgó, debajo del original, otro cartel con el "mote", "más que nada por ahorrarle al kioskero tener que dar indicaciones".
Dicen que la culpa la tuvo un estudiante de Medicina, que en los años cuarenta del siglo pasado se acercaba asiduamente al local para que la abuela Avelina le sirviera una mezcla elegida por él mismo, un fluido que acabó bautizando como "penicilina", en honor al nuevo remedio que, decía el joven, se estaba gestando en Reino Unido y sería toda una revolución médica. Con el tiempo, el bar pasó a ser El Penicilino, y el autor de la ocurrencia, "el Fleming".
Por jubilación
Cristina y su marido, Manuel Cossío, se han esmerado en conservar la apariencia que el local tenía en el siglo XIX, cuando la familia de ella se puso al mando. La gestión de la pareja ha durado veinte años, los que figuraban en el contrato de alquiler. Ahora anuncian, desde las ventanas del local, que no les faltan ganas de echar el cierre al grito de "¡Nos jubilamos!". "Va entre exclamaciones porque viene de júbilo", aclara Manuel. El futuro del local es, hoy por hoy, una incógnita, aunque la pareja confiesa que no tienen "ningún interés económico en que esto siga. En todo caso, sentimental".
Cristina tomó el relevo detrás de la barra de su abuela Avelina, que se "retiró" a la muy respetable edad de 99 años. "Por aquel entonces mi familia tenía una fábrica en Tudela de donde traíamos los aguardientes que se vendían", rememora. "Desde aquí se repartía a otros bares de la capital".
El local hizo durante mucho tiempo las veces de bar y expendiduría. Hace unas décadas estaba incluso preparado para acoger espectáculos musicales, y donde ahora se agolpan siete inmensas tinajas, estaba el rincón del pianista. Eso fue cuando se llamaba "La Solera", o quizá cuando era "La Elenita" o la "Taberna Avelina", nadie lo recuerda bien. Cristina dice que el bar se abrió por primera vez hace mucho, "cuando el mar Muerto era aún enfermo leve", bromea.
Desde entonces ha pasado por la esquina de la plaza de la Libertad lo más granado de la cultura vallisoletana y algún "espontáneo" internacional. La pareja recuerda bien cómo el actor británico Kenneth Branagh, que acudió hace unos años a la Seminci, acudió cada día -mañana y tarde- de los tres que estuvo en la capital a probar la "penicilina". Actores, grupos musicales como Celtas Cortos, Greta y los Garbo o Candeal; pintores y escritores como Félix Cuadrado Lomas y Gustavo Martín Garzo, han probado las bondades del mejunje. Todos los exponentes de la cultura local se han sentado a las mesas de forja. El más fiel de todos, Manuel, que en los últimos veinte años ha aprovechado los ratos muertos entre cliente y cliente para cultivar su pasión por la lectura.
Salvar la historia local
El retiro de Cristina y Manuel pone fin a la gestión de más de cien años de los Martín. Ella aprovecha los estertores finales de su paso por el bar para agradecer a su familia "el buen gusto que tuvo por mantenerlo". La catalogación de la que disfrutaba el antiquísimo local hasta hace unos años lo protegía de la desaparición. Pero esa tutela municipal ya no existe y ahora el lugar podría incluso reducirse a polvo si así se dispusiera.
Cada día los clientes habituales piden a Manuel que no se jubile. Uno de ellos incluso comenta que, "para salvar la historia de Valladolid, habría que empezar por El Penicilino". Hay veces en que la plebe propone y la Historia dispone.
