Y seguimos hablando de “modas” (ver referencia a los blogs) aunque en este caso quizá sea una tendencia aún emergente. Me refiero a los VJ que, con perdón, y simplificándolo mucho, podríamos considerar el acrónimo de video-jockey, que en su forma más rudimentaria se referiría a aquel que “pincha” vídeos (por analogía con el disc-jockey que “pincha” discos) y cuyo hábitat natural serían los Clubs (en términos más castizos: las discotecas). Aunque, según pasa el tiempo, van surgiendo otras facetas del VJ que van desde la animación y el cine experimental a la creación de software pasando por las perfomances.
El elemento esencial es el software de edición de vídeo a tiempo real, que permite al artista lograr la simbiosis necesaria entre la música y las imágenes que se proyectan, normalmente utilizando como herramientas narrativas el loop (repeticiones constantes) y el random (valores aleatorios) y que vienen a deconstruir el tiempo como unidad de significación: si una imagen se repite o un movimiento se congela, quiere decir que el tiempo no existe, o lo que es lo mismo, que es infinito. Estas técnicas narrativas fueron desarrolladas a mediados del siglo pasado por la “música concreta”: música creada a partir de sonidos grabados en cintas y posteriormente alterados mediante modificaciones en la duración, la amplitud, el pitch; conceptos y procesos que actualmente se realizan mediante un sampler.
El artista VJ se concentra en las fusiones-transiciones de las imágenes, a partir de las cuales se crean nuevas formas de significación con imágenes que en principio no estaban destinadas para ello pero que, por asociación, en el contexto de la proyección, producen la sensación requerida.
